Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides services to sick newborns that need closed monitoring and intervention and newborns who are stable but still need specialized care before being discharged.
This section focuses on the needs of the newborn who are:
- Premature and other high risk newborn (born less than 37 weeks gestation or more than 42 weeks gestation)
- In respiratory distress (rapid breathing, grunting and apnea)
- Small or large for gestational age
- Have low blood sugar
- Experiencing hypothermia (low body temperature)
- Need for extra monitoring (oxygen, intravenous therapy and medicines)

Assessment and Immediate Care of the Newborn
Practicing essential newborn care and immediate post-birth assessments, including monitoring vital signs, weight, and overall health, to identify any early signs of complications.
Feeding and Nutrition
Guidance on breastfeeding, ensuring the newborn receives the necessary nutrients for healthy growth.
Immunizations
Administration of routine vaccinations as part of the newborn’s early preventive care.
Infant Screening
Routine screenings such as Hearing Screening, Newborn Screening test and Critical Congenital Heart Disease Screening for early detection and prevention of some newborn conditions.
Parent Education
Providing parents with essential information on infant care practices, such as breastfeeding, safe sleep practices, hygiene, and early developmental milestones.
Support for Bonding
Encouraging and facilitating parent-infant bonding through skin-to-skin contact and nurturing care.
Specialized Care for Preterm and Sick Newborns
For those requiring additional attention, the section offers specialized care such as neonatal intensive care, respiratory support, incubators , IV medications and monitoring.
